A Look Inside the BEATSURFING Crew:
How Pascal & The Team Created LØW
皆さん、こんにちは
I was so happy that Oscar gave the public a look into the mind of Pascal and how we create things. His recent video is a great snapshot of our life at the company, a blend of chaotic creativity, deep technical exploration, and a genuine love for sound.
In a recent video with Underdog Electronic Music School, Pascal pulled back the curtain on our latest plugin, LØW. What’s fascinating is that this tool didn’t start with a market research spreadsheet; it started with a specific frustration. Coming from a background as a mix engineer, Pascal was tired of wrestling with bass dynamics, trying to balance the sustain of the low-end with the attack of the mids using endless EQ and compression chains.
He wanted a tool that let him “draw” the mix directly into the synthesis.
The "Russian Doll" of Prototyping
One thing that always fascinated me was the prototyping that Pascal would do in Max for live. He would be explaining some change, then click into what looked like a small bit of code, revealing another huge rabbit hole of details that made that part up.
Pascal showing this “Russian Doll” approach to prototyping engines and features using Max for Live and RNBO and seeing Oscar make the same face as me when I first saw that was great. It’s incredible to see the project file: you open one box to find a complex web of nodes, open another, find more underneath that, and find even more underneath that.
This workflow allows him to move incredibly fast. Pascal describes it as having his “left hand on the keys and right hand on the code.” He isn’t writing lines of C++; he is jamming with the algorithm and code blocks, getting immediate feedback. This bridges the gap between artist and developer, allowing him to prototype ideas in 20 minutes that might otherwise take weeks to build and test. He can then use RNBO to share his creations with our developers, who can then tackle the final coding.
Philosophy: The Tool Maker’s Album
Perhaps the most inspiring part of the video is hearing Pascal’s philosophy on product design. He views releasing a plugin the same way an artist views releasing an album. We might build 45 oscillators, but we curate them down to the best 20 to ensure the “vibe” is cohesive.
Ultimately, we build these tools for you. As Pascal says, he might be too old to invent a future genre himself. His goal is to build the tools that allow the next generation to “misunderstand” the tech, find the happy accidents and create new genres that don’t exist yet.
We can’t wait to see how you use LØW and perhaps even “misuse” it, to invent sounds we never dreamed of.
Watch the full breakdown in the video.
